About the Artist
Is it possible to capture the colors of laughter? Virginia artist Carolyn Schallmo blends a deft sense on color with a child-like sense of humor to create a wide range of alluring works that tickle the fancy and invite a second or third look to take it all in. From her own lively line of greeting cards to delightful paintings and gorgeous full all murals, Schallmo infuses her art with her own bubbly personality.
"I try to celebrate the simple things in life that we don't always acknowledge," she says. "I love that there is beauty, humor and brilliance hiding in the smallest of places. My paintings incorporate that so you'll be inspired to take a second look."
Carolyn's unique polymer clay creations first earned acclaim in the 1980's, when she was owner and resident artist at Daisy's, an old-fashioned penny candy store and blacksmith shop in the historical railroad town of Ellicott City, MD. A second shop was opened in Owego, NY, where her art gallery featured the works of local craftsmen and artists. Her work was popular enough to earn a two-year run as an ongoing crafter on a local television station in Binghamton, NY and she was featured on HGTV's Bed and Bath Design show.
After taking a few years off to create her most beautiful works yet, four adorable daughters, Carolyn opened Carolyn! Eclectic Expressions of Color and Mirth! in downtown Richmond and expanded her artistic taent to include greeting cards, murals and paintings. This year, Carolyn has added a new chapter to her art portfolio: book illustration. In addition to "The Naked Portfolio Manager", Carolyn is the illustration for a series of children's books featuring The Party Fairy's "Miss Hattie" character, and "Manners for Largo", a children's book by June Lankford.
